Equivalents are the ounces or package amounts that equal that product when diced, chopped, grated, or shredded.

We covered common substitutions last week. When you're baking, you can really save time when you know that, for instance, a 10 ounce package of large marshmallows equals 4 cups of mini marshmallows.

Knowing these equivalents will also help you planning your grocery list. If you need a cup of bread crumbs, look at this chart; you'll see that three average slices of bread are what you need.

Equivalents

1 cup mashed bananas = 2 large bananas

1 lemon = 3 Tbsp. juice

1 cup vanilla wafer crumbs = 23 cookies

1 cup graham cracker crumbs = 14 single graham crackers

1 cup chopped apple = 1 large apple

1 cup orange juice = 3 medium oranges

1/4 cup butter = 1/2 stick butter

1-1/2 cups grated carrots = 1 pound carrots

1 cup chocolate cookie crumbs = 20 cookies
