Which Apples Are Best For Baking?

How Many Apples Are in a Pound?
- 3 medium apples = 1 pound
- 2 1/2 cups sliced apples = 1 pound
- 2 1/2 - 3 pounds of apples is enough for a large deep dish pie.
Easy Apple Crisp Recipe
- 3 pounds apples (9 medium apples) chosen from the list above
- 1/4 cup all purpose flour
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 1/4 cups all purpose flour
- 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
- 3/4 cup white sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon, more or less according to taste
- 12 Tablespoons (1 1/2 sticks) butter, cold, cut in pieces
- 1/2 cup chopped nuts, your choice, optional
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- Spray 9" X 13" baking dish with vegetable spray.
- Peel, core and slice apples and place in the baking dish.
- In a small bowl, combine 1/4 cup flour, 1/4 cup brown sugar and 1/2 tsp cinnamon. Add to apples and toss until coated.
- In a medium bowl with a pastry blender or using a stand mixer, combine the remaining flour, brown sugar, white sugar and cinnamon.
- Using the pastry blender or mixer, cut in the butter until crisp mixture is crumbly. Add nuts at the end if desired and spread evenly over apples.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 45-60 minutes, or until the crisp is nicely browned and apples are tender and bubbly.
- Let cool a bit before serving. Apple crisp right out of the oven is very hot!
- Serve apple crisp à la mode with ice cream or sweetened whipped cream.
- Refrigerate any leftovers.
- Serves 6-8.
