Apple Crisp is an old recipe that is as great today as it was in the past. Even though your grandmother may have made it your kids will love it today.

Apple crisp and the British equivalent apple crumble is one of the best easy desserts to make during the fall when the apple crop starts to come in. The delicious flavor of apples with a crunchy topping is great when the air starts to get cooler and the days begin to get a little shorter. The best thing about it is that it is easy and cheap to make and your family will love it.

Apple crisp is made with apples, butter, sugar, flour or oatmeal and some cinnamon. There are other apple desserts that are sometimes called apple crisp but they are different. Apple Brown Betty is a dessert made by layering apples with bread and sugar making a sweet lasagna type arrangement. Apple grunt, also called pandowdy is similar also using drop biscuits on top of the apples instead of the crunchy topping.

This dessert has been around for a really long time but it was first published in a cookbook in 1896. It is expected that it was made during the medieval time because apples were one of the main staples of the table. Cooking apples should be used to make it as they are a bit more tart and they do not loose their shape while cooking.

The following recipe is a basic Apple Crisp recipe that is simple to make.

Easy Apple Crisp

Ingredients:

  • 6 large apples; cored, peeled, and sliced
  • ¾ cups old fashion oat meal
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup flour
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon ginger
  • 6 tablespoons butter, softened.

Directions:

  1. Slice apples and place in the bottom of a greased 9 inch square baking pan.
  2. In a bowl combine oat meal, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger and mix around.
  3. Add the softened butter and with a pastry cutter cut it into the dry mixture until it resembles course meal.
  4. Sprinkle this mixture over the apples and place in a preheated 350 degree oven for 40 minutes or until it is bubbly and the crust is brown and crispy.
  5. Let cool for 10 minutes and serve warm with a topping of ice cream or whipped cream.

Want something similar that is a little more “gourmet”? You can add the taste of caramel apples. Granny Smith apples work best with this recipe.

Caramel Apple Crisp

Ingredients:

  • 8 apples, peeled, cored and sliced into 1/4” slices
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1-1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup quick oats
  • 2/3 cup butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 10 ounces of caramel sauce (the kind you use on ice cream)

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees and grease an 8 inch square baking dish and a 9 x 13 baking dish.
  2. Place half the apples in the 8 inch square dish and the other half in the 9 x 13 dish.
  3. Sprinkle each with ½ cup of the sugar.
  4. In a bowl combine brown sugar, flour, oats, spices and the butter.
  5. Stir well and spread half the mixture over the 9 x 13 pan. Drizzle about ½ cup of the caramel sauce over top the butter mixture. (NOTE: The apples in the 8 inch square pan do not have any topping or caramel sauce yet.)
  6. Place both the pans in the oven and bake for 20 minutes.
  7. Remove from oven.
  8. With a spoon move apples from 8 inch square pan over top of the contents of the 9 x 13 pan. T
  9. op with remaining half of butter mixture and ½ cup more of the caramel.
  10. Bake 15 more minutes or until top is crisp.
  11. Remove and cool for 10 minutes.
  12. Serve with vanilla ice cream and more caramel sauce over top.

Here you have a simple everyday recipe and one that is a bit complicated but really good and suitable to serve guests. Try some apple crisp when the apples start to ripen in the fall. You will be glad you did.
